Hip pain or symptoms can occur in ANY of the above structures listed below. It can be caused by incorrect posture/mechanics (joints not moving properly), wear and tear, compression, sprain (ligaments), strain/tightening (muscles) inflammation of the blood vessels/nerves, fractures (bone) or originate from above or below the hip.
Structures of the Hip
The hip is a ball and socket joint and has 2 bones. The Femur and acetabulum of the pelvis. Between the Femur and acetabulum is an articular cartilage (labrum) to prevent friction. The bones are held together and stabilised by ligaments which prevent dislocation. The joints are moved and further stabilised by the 4 groups of muscles: the gluteal group; the lateral rotator group; the adductor group; and the iliopsoas group. The other structures involved in the hip are the bursae, blood vessels (veins and arteries) and nerves (T12 to S3).
Diagnosis
A diagnosis, therefore can be difficult without the appropriate training. As primary care physicians, each of our practitioners at Future Proof Care, are trained to perform a thorough history and examination to gain the correct diagnosis.
History and Examination
When a patient comes to the Practice, they will be asked questions regarding their presentation. This is known as the ‘History’. Thereafter, an examination will be performed of the hip, back, pelvis, legs, abdomen or posture or another system. Many mechanical, orthopaedic, neurological and muscle tests will be carried out to arrive at a diagnosis with clinical clarity of what is going on.
